Casper, WY: Studio City Mesa to Open March 27th, Downton Iris Stadium 8 Closed

Posted on Monday, March 23, 2015 2:38 PM

The new Studio City Mesa + ARQ in the Mesa Center in Casper, Wyoming is set to open on Friday, March 27, 2015.

The 11-screen movie theater will feature ten auditoriums with electric recliners and reserved seating. An eleventh auditorium is going to be called "the Cooper®" which will have a 64-foot-wide curved screen and a Meyer audio system for what parent company Movie Palace, Inc. calls the "ARQ® immersive experience."

With the upcoming opening of the new theater, the Iris Stadium 8 downtown closed the weekend of March 13th. The theater's closure has been known since plans for the Studio City Mesa theater were presented to City officials, according to an article published recently in the Casper Star-Tribune:

The Iris Theater, a downtown Casper fixture, closed this week ahead of the opening of a new cinema complex on the west end.

The move is not a surprise. City officials have known of plans to close the Iris Stadium 8 Theatres since Casper-based Movie Palace submitted its site plan for Studio City Mesa, a high-tech, 11-screen theater under construction off Wyoming Boulevard.

But a closing date was not announced. Instead, a short notice was posted on the Iris doors recently.

“It leaves a hole in the downtown because it creates so much traffic, so much activity,” said then-Mayor Paul Meyer, a business owner in the Old Yellowstone District, in a December interview. “It’s just cool.”

Movie Palace, Inc. continues to operate three other downtown theaters: the Rialto Theatre, America Stadium Theatre, and Fox III $ Savers Theatre, as well as five other theaters in Wyoming.
