Writer/Director Neill Blomkamp posted a provocative message on Instagram yesterday that appears to confirm that he'll be working on a movie that takes place in the universe of Alien, Aliens, and Prometheus.
Blomkamp is best known for directing District 9, which was nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay, and was a truly wonderful science fiction movie that was the antithesis of the soul-less sci-fi actioners that are so frequently produced. Elysium didn't make the same kind of impact, but while I was tepid on the movie at first, I've grown to appreciate it more upon subsequent viewings. His latest project, Chappie, is due in theaters March 6, 2015.
An article in Variety is saying that this new project will fall in the chronology after Prometheus and the planned Prometheus 2 project, which would put it before the events of Alien. Alien and Aliens were incredible movies and remain at or at least near the top of the heap of science fiction movies, but even though it was directed by Alien director Ridley Scott, Prometheus didn't fare well in the box office. It's another movie that I had a lackluster opinion of after the first viewing (I think there were too many Alien/s-level expectations that no movie could fulfill), but my opinion improved greatly in subsequent viewings. It adds to the greater universe without being a copy for the sake of franchise-milking.
I see Blomkamp's announcement as being very good news for the franchise, and I look forward to seeing what he can do with it!
