Fort Lauderdale, FL: AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater Closed for Renovation - Reopening Scheduled for October 10, 2014

Posted on Monday, September 29, 2014 5:45 PM

The AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale, Florida closed in the middle of August 2014 for some renovations and upgrades and will reopen on October 10, 2014.

The Sun Sentinel has articles about the upgrades that are happening, as well as the news that the theater will reopen a few days earlier than it had originally planned:

The theater's large IMAX screen, which measures 60 feet wide by 80 feet high, is being replaced with a new one, and it will be illuminated by the original IMAX film projector as well as a new Digital Cinema Projection system. In many cases, IMAX film projectors are being replaced by the digital equipment, which is unfortunate, since IMAX film has the potential for much higher quality than any digital projection system is currently capable of delivering. Whether that means that the theater will be able to show mainstream movies on IMAX film, or if they will all be using the digital equipment, remains to be seen.

However, given that director Christopher Nolan really wants his new movie, Interstellar, to be shown on film, and there is now an entry for Interstellar: The IMAX Experience in 70mm Film in our records, this theater might be one of the few locations in the country where you can see a movie that was shot on IMAX film projected using IMAX film. That's not confirmed at this point, but the possibility is definitely there.

In addition to the new projection equipment, the articles above mention that the seats are being replaced and refurbishing the ceiling and sound treatments where needed. It mentions that the theater will have "a digital surround sound system broadcasting through 56 speakers," but it's unclear as to whether that equipment was already installed previously.

Until the theater reopens, moviegoers looking for movies on an IMAX screen will have to go to the AMC Aventura 24 or the Regal Sawgrass 23 & IMAX, both of which are about 11 miles away. Both locations are likely smaller IMAX auditoriums, so you may want to look at the Regal Broward Stadium 12 & RPX to see what size of screen they have if you are hoping to see Denzel Washington in The Equalizer / The Equalizer: The IMAX Experience.
