Carmike Cinemas logoThe Carmike Broadway 16 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina will be getting one of Carmike's big-screen concept "BigD" auditoriums in August 2012, according to a press release issued by Carmike Cinemas today. The new auditorium will feature a Digital Cinema Projection system capable of both 2D and 3D presentations and will be outfitted with a 7.1 channel sound system that can be upgraded later to 11.1 channels.

“We're justifiably excited about bringing this innovative theatre experience to Myrtle Beach and the Carolinas,” said David Passman, Carmike’s President and CEO. The “BIGD” sets a new gold standard for the cinematic experience. It delivers unparalleled picture clarity. The light output is one of the brightest in the industry with a picture quality of noticeably higher resolution than HD. And, the deep, resonating DIGITAL sound — combined with the comfort of the plush leather high-back rocking seats — make this an unbelievably exciting movie-going experience, very different than what's offered at other theatres. It's something that has to be experienced in person to be truly appreciated.”

The BigD auditorium appears to be located in the building of the former Myrtle Beach IMAX 3D Theatre, which closed in late 2011. Whereas that screen measured 83 feet wide by 60 feet tall, the press release states that the BigD screen measures 82 feet wide and "over three stories tall" which should amount to approximately 35 feet high (for a 2.35:1 screen).

Carmike Cinemas also operates the Carmike Colonial 12 in North Myrtle Beach, as well as 235 other locations in 35 states. This is the first BigD installations in the Carolinas, but the company has it in 13 other locations.
