Copyright Paramount PicturesTom Cruise lit up the big screen in 1986 with the hit movie Top Gun, which wowed audiences with great action shots of dogfights between fighter jets and a great soundtrack. Now, 27 years later, Paramount Pictures is feeling the need for speed again, and this time, it's in 3D with the release next month of Top Gun: An IMAX 3D Experience.

USA Today interviews producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the production of the original movie, and he mentions some anecdotes about director Tony Scott:

"Some of the action scenes were of course a little more difficult but they did a brilliant job," Bruckheimer says of the 3-D conversion. "It really is exciting when they land on those carriers, and the dogfights. You really think Tony shot it in 3-D. Tony was thrilled, and he was a perfectionist."

So much so, in fact, that Bruckheimer remembers the time Scott had a difference of opinion with the captain of an aircraft carrier while filming a training exercise: "Tony didn't like the direction of the carrier because it wasn't backlit, so he went to the captain and he said, 'Can you turn the carrier?' He's like, 'I'm not going to do that. It's going to cost us $15,000 or $20,000 of fuel to do that.' Tony took out his checkbook and wrote a check."

Top Gun: An IMAX 3D Experience will be released in theaters February 8, 2013 and is planned for a short 6-day run, so check out the Showtimes page for opening day to see where it's playing and when!

If you can't make it to the theater, the movie will be re-released on home video in 3D on February 19, 2013. Amazon has it available now for pre-order at 50% off:

Top Gun (Two-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / Digital Copy)

Looking back on the movie after all these years, it's hard not to notice the cheese factor, but that's always been the case with many movies, especially in the action genre. Once you set that aside, which isn't very hard to do, you'll be sucked into the action and the fun that's in front of you, and only the most jaded will not enjoy the experience. Just watching the trailer and hearing those "t-t-t-t-t" notes in the background takes me back to seeing it in theater and contemplating pulling the 2D Blu-ray off shelf and cranking up the volume!
