If you follow the entertainment industry at all, you've probably heard by now that Netflix announced on Monday that it was splitting the company into two pieces. Their streaming service will stay under the Netflix brand, and the popular discs-by-mail service will be spun off into a new brand called Qwikster.
The announcement was made by CEO Reed Hastings on the Netflix blog Sunday, and via an E-Mail to all customers on Monday.
The two services will be completely separate, with separate web sites, separate and disconnected movie queues, and separate billing on your credit card statement.
This news was quite a surprise to just about everyone, and to be honest, if it hadn't been sent to my E-Mail inbox, I would have suspected that the Netflix web site had been hacked.
Over the past couple of days, I've been trying to figure out what to say, and how much to say, about my opinions of this change. While not at a loss for words, I've decided to take the stance of saying nothing rather than hurling insults in the direction of the company that I've been loyal to, recommended others to subscribe to, and until now, found great value in.
Perhaps this will all make sense in the future, and we'll look back and wonder what we were worried about. Or perhaps, we'll look back and wax nostalgic about the company that once was the best at what it did.
