Warner Bros. announced last week that they would be celebrating their 85th anniversary by releasing 85 movies to Video on Demand (VOD) on cable and satellite providers. Many of those 85 movies will be featured in high definition, some for the first time ever.

According to a press release issued by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, titles such as “Superman: The Movie,” “Casablanca” and “Full Metal Jacket” will be available via VOD from Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox Cable, Charter Communications and Rogers Cable (Canada) as well as satellite providers DirecTV and DISH Network. Additionally, Time Warner is presenting a free movie series in the New York area where movie fans can see their favorite movies for free and under the stars.

Of course, many of these titles are also available in high definition on Blu-ray and even the now-defunct HD DVD formats. Watching HD on disc is most likely going to result in higher quality (I can't think of any example where VOD picture or sound quality would trump HD on disc), and you can own the movies on Blu-ray at up to 45% off list price from Amazon.com or rent them from Netflix (two shameless plugs for some great Gift Shop merchants!). Many VOD terms are pretty limited, including 24 hour viewing windows and auto-delete expiration dates.
