Wehrenberg Theatres Announces Digital Cinema Projection Conversion

Posted on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 12:03 PM

NEC Display Solutions of America announced yesterday that movie theater chain Wehrenberg Theatres will be replacing its 35mm film projectors with Digital Cinema Projection Systems from NEC for its 210 screens across Missouri and other central states.

65 systems have already been installed, and the remaining conversions will begin in April and are slated for completion by September.

The press release mentions that the projectors being installed will be a mix of 2K and 4K models, so hopefully, Wehrenberg will differentiate the 4K shows so that moviegoers will know what they're going to be getting. All of the projectors will be 3D-capable.

Wehrenberg Theatres operates 15 theatres in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.

I have a good number of questions regarding the big push to go digital, which very few avoid addressing, mainly because they don't know of a resolution in the works. My greatest complaint with digital in general is the poor convergence of most machines and the lack of tech persons on site to resolve it... or at least minimize it. Going to 4k may improve it, but even that cannot give the warmth and depth of film. Digital just plain and simply looks "flat" and uninviting on the screen . Additionally, what efforts are being made to resolve the vision problems caused by 3-D? While hearing of more and more problems patrons are having after a few minutes viewing a 3-D feature, I have heard of no resolutions... sounds like a law suit in the making if the eye problems turn out to be permanent. Why are the purveyors of digital so quiet on the negatives of digital projection?
