Carmike Cinemas logoThe new Carmike Cinemas - Cherry Blossom 14 in Traverse City, Michigan opened yesterday, December 17, 2015 in the Buffalo Ridge Center development off Highway 31 (Division Street). With that theater's opening, two of Carmike's theaters in Traverse City have closed. The Carmike Horizon Cinemas closed December 6, 2015, and the Carmike Grand Traverse Cinemas closed on December 15, 2015.

The new theater features an IMAX auditorium with a screen that measures 66' wide and "more than three stories tall," according to the press release issued by Carmike Cinemas. That auditorium was originally going to be one of Carmike's BigD auditoriums, according to the original announcement in January 2014.

The other thirteen auditoriums will have 7.1-channel sound systems, DLP Digital Cinema Projection systems, as well as "large, wall-to-wall screens, stadium seating, luxury leather seats, floatable armrests and convenient cup holders."

Carmike President and CEO David Passman stated, “We are thrilled to be a part of the Traverse City community and to bring the IMAX’s immersive entertainment experience to local cinemagoers ahead of a film slate packed with highly-anticipated film releases, including the upcoming premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As ‘America’s Hometown Theatre Chain’, Carmike is dedicated to providing guests with an unrivaled cinema-going experience. Reflecting this commitment to our patrons, the new Cherry Blossom 14 entertainment complex will showcase our superior cinema technology, including premium large format digital projection and impeccable sound, along with the finest in-theatre seating, premium amenities and the exceptional customer service of our dedicated associates.”

The new 14-screen theater was built on the site of the former Horizon Outlet Mall and replaced the 10-screen Horizon Cinemas nearby, which was located at the opposite end of the Buffalo Ridge Center development. The former theater will become a Lucky's Market natural and organic food store, according to an article published in the Traverse City Record-Eagle in August.

If you had the Horizon Cinemas or the Grand Traverse Cinemas marked as one of your Favorite Theaters, we automatically marked the Cherry Blossom 14 as a Favorite Theater for you, so you don't have to do anything more to get to the Showtimes page and other information for the new theater!

Other theaters (not owned by Carmike) in the area include the State Theatre and the Bijou by the Bay in downtown Traverse City. The nearest IMAX theater is the Celebration! Cinema Grand Rapids North & IMAX in Grand Rapids, which is more than two hours away.
