The Strand Cinemas in Manitowoc, Wisconsin closed March 30, 2014. According to an article published recently in the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the theater's owner couldn't see how it could survive when the new 10-screen Carmike Cinemas location opens near the freeway later this year.

"We can't compete with Carmike. They're too big," owner Joe Bauknecht said Friday afternoon of the Carmike Cinema 10, which is scheduled to open on the west side of Manitowoc in early summer. The theater will have 10 screens compared with the Strand's six.

"Manitowoc can't support 16 screens," he said.

Until the Carmike location opens, the closest theater for moviegoers in Manitowoc is the Lakeshore Cinema Cafe, with the Marcus Sheboygan Cinemas and Marcus Green Bay East more than a half hour away to the south and north, respectively.
