High-Def Digest Goes Hands-On with a Pioneer Dolby Atmos Sound System

Posted on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 3:44 PM

Dolby Atmos Home logoMichael S. Palmer from High-Def Digest recently visited Pioneer to audition some of the company's Dolby Atmos-capable sound systems. The timing of this visit was due to the Blu-ray release of Transformers: Age of Extinction, which has the first Dolby Atmos soundtrack available on Blu-ray. Since he didn't have the necessary equipment to audition that portion of the soundtrack, he was able to finish that part of his Blu-ray review using their equipment.

Three weeks ago, I was in a bit of a pickle. Supposed to review the very first Blu-ray disc encoded with the all new home theatre version of my favorite theatrical surround sound format, Dolby Atmos. One problem. I haven't been able to upgrade my home theatre yet.

Luckily, Dolby put me in touch with Pioneer to set up a demo to watch 'Transformers: Age of Extinction - 3D' in Dolby Atmos for the first time.

In addition to reviewing the Dolby Atmos track on the Transformers disc, he was able to experience some demo material that included Dolby-created Atmos trailers and some Atmos-encoded music content as well.

Pioneer Elite SP-EFS73 Dolby Atmos-enabled Andrew Jones Floorstanding SpeakerThe article is well worth reading, as he goes over his impressions of not only the functionality of the Pioneer receiver, but also the special "Atmos Enabled" reflecting speakers that Pioneer is offering, which are built into the tops of some tower speakers.

These speakers reflect sound onto the ceiling and to your listening position, with the benefits of getting overhead sound without having to mount speakers on/in your ceiling. While this doesn't sound like it would be a good idea at first impression, initial reports from people who have heard demos using this type of speaker are surprisingly positive. Since many people won't be willing/able to install speakers in their ceilings, these types of speakers are probably going to be the most common way for people to get Atmos capability in their homes.

I won't spoil the article by giving away his conclusions, so you'll just have to click the Read link below to view the full article!
