Two AMC movie theaters in the Detroit, Michigan area now have new IMAX installations to attract customers, according to an article in the Detroit News:

Two new Imax theaters will open at multiplexes in Metro Detroit just in time to show the IMAX version of "Where the Wild Things Are" on Friday. Both the AMC Livonia 20 and AMC Star Great Lakes Crossing 25 are adding IMAX screens that will combine the highly defined images, digital sound and theater geometry (if not the gargantuan screen at The Henry Ford) of IMAX.

That last sentence is a key item, as it implies that these are not going to be the "Think Big" screens that IMAX built its reputation on, but rather somewhat smaller screens lit by digital projectors, as part of IMAX's new push to getting into more theaters and getting away from the massive film format that it became famous for.

IMAX calls these smaller theaters, usually conversions of existing auditoriums, their "multiplex design" IMAX theaters. After a public uproar mostly started by actor/comedian Aziz Ansari this summer, IMAX is now identifying these theaters on their web site, if you know where to look.

A quick check of the IMAX web site shows that the IMAX installations at the AMC Livonia 20 in Livonia and the AMC Star Great Lakes 25 in Auburn Hills are of the new "multiplex design." The screen sizes of these theaters are not indicated, and I was not able to find a contact number for either theater to obtain that information.

The two new installations join the AMC Forum 30 in Sterling Heights and Showcase Cinemas Ann Arbor in Ypsilanti as the area's multiplex designs, while the IMAX - Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in Dearborn is the traditional IMAX design which has a 84 foot wide by 62 foot high screen. The IMAX - Detroit Science Center in Detroit is a dome-style IMAX theater which does show first-run movies, but I wouldn't recommend it due to the distortion caused by the dome.
