Denon Releases DTS:X and HDMI 2.0a Firmware for AVR-X7200WA

Posted on Thursday, January 28, 2016 2:54 PM and updated on Thursday, March 3, 2016 1:41 PM

Late yesterday, Denon released its firmware for the AVR-X7200WA (and AVR-X7200W) that enables DTS:X decoding and support for HDMI 2.0a (which enables HDR playback). In doing so, the company held to the date they announced in December for the first of their products to receive the firmware update.

The 11.2-channel* A/V receiver sits atop Denon's line of receivers and has an MSRP of $2,999.

For more information about the update and how to apply it to your receiver, Denon has created the AVR-X7200W(A) DTS:X Update guide. That document mentions that the following features have been added:

  • DTS:X decoding
  • DTS Neural:X upmixing to enjoy non DTS:X content (in PCM or DTS format) using the full DTS:X speaker configuration

The following changes are included in this update as well:

  • DTS Neo:X will be replaced by DTS Neural:X
  • Dolby Surround mode usage will be limited to PCM and Dolby content

That latter point will catch some people that have been enjoying using Dolby's Surround upmixer with movies encoded with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. After this update has been applied, you will be forced to use the DTS Neural:X upmixer instead.

Additionally, the update includes support for HDMI 2.0a, which enables HDR playback from media devices, such as the new Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

It's logical that Denon would start at the top of its product line for such updates. For many people, however, the 11.2-channel* $2,199 AVR-X6200W delivers much of the performance of its pricier sibling, while those with less needs can step down to the 7.2-channel $1,499 AVR-X4200W. If they hold to their original timeline, the DTS:X firmware for the AVR-X4200W and the AVR-X6200W will be available on February 18, 2016.

This means that the next three weeks should make owners of all three pretty happy, and prospective buyers can make a decision based on the features they need. To find out more information about which is best for you, check out Denon's page for the AVR-X7200WA and the chart that compares it to the other two Atmos/DTS:X capable models.

Enthusiasts on the AVS Forum have begun to download the update and the first impressions of playing the already-released DTS:X titles on Blu-ray, so if you're interested, select the link below:

* While the Denon AVR-X7200WA and AVR-X6200 can process 11.2 channels, they have amplifiers for 9 channels, so an additional stereo amplifier is necessary to power the second set of height channels, for example.
