The Moviemax Theatres at Westfield Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad, California closed on November 30, 2014. Its closure precedes the opening of the new Regal Cinemas Carlsbad 12 across the street in the Westfield Carlsbad
Shopping Mall on December 11th.

According to our records, the four-screen Moviemax opened in 1969. We were fortunate enough to find a collection of photos taken by LebowskiT1000 on CinemaTreasures.org and placed them in the Photo Gallery for the theater as a record of what it looked like before its eventual repurposing, demolition, or whatever the future holds.

Moviegoers in the area will not have to wait long to see movies on the big screen again, however, as the new Regal Cinemas Carlsbad 12 will be opening next week! The 12-screen theater will be holding preview events on December 7th-9th to help the staff iron out all the wrinkles, and then its grand opening is scheduled for Thursday, December 11, 2014.

According to the press release issued by the company, the new theater will feature "Regal King Size Recliners" which are large, luxurious seats that power-recline in multiple positions. The theaters Sony Entertainment Access system will assist deaf, hard of hearing, blind, and vision-impaired customers to enjoy movies through special eyewear for privately-viewed closed captions and descriptive audio text via wireless headsets.

"Regal Carlsbad 12 is truly a state-of-the-art entertainment destination with a pristine presentation and featuring the Regal luxury experience with oversize recliners," says Rachel Lueras, marketing manager for Regal Entertainment Group. "We are proud to be a part of the exciting new plan for an open-air shopping center in Carlsbad and we invite moviegoers to stretch out, relax and recline while watching a movie at this new luxury theatre."

Regal's web site lists the following additional amenities available at the new theater:

Preview Events - December 7-9, 2014

The theater's preview events on December 7th-9th will include $3 movies based on daily themes and small soft drinks and small popcorns available for a $3 donation each. All proceeds will benefit local charities. See the schedule below for more details:
