"American Ultra" Slated for November 24, 2015 Release on Blu-ray with DTS:X Soundtrack

Movie PosterLions Gate Entertainment announced today that they will be releasing American Ultra on Blu-ray, DVD, and on-demand November 24, 2015. The action-comedy will be released on Digital HD (streaming) November 10th.

The movie was released on August 21st, and managed to take the #6 spot on the box office report that week, but it didn't make a big splash. It stars Jesse Eisenberg as a stoner, and Kristen Stewart as his girlfriend. Their sleepy, small-town existence is disrupted when his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a government operation set to wipe him out.

The Blu-ray Combo Pack will include a DVD and Digital HD and will feature a DTS:X soundtrack on the Blu-ray disc, which makes it the second Blu-ray title to have it (the first was Ex Machina). The press release touts the immersive DTS:X soundtrack as replicating and conveying "the fluid movement of sound by accurately matching sounds to what is visually occurring on - and off - the screen to create a richer soundscape than has previously been possible."

Basically, DTS:X is an alternative to the immersive Dolby Atmos soundtrack that has been available on about a dozen Blu-ray releases since September 2014. Both formats utilize channel-based and object-based sound elements to place sound not only around the listener but above them as well. For more information about DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, please see our Help sections for Home Theater, as well as the Digital Sound - Formats Explained, which explains how those technologies are implemented in commercial movie theaters.

Special features included are as follows:

  • "Activating American Ultra" Documentary
  • "Assassinating on a Budget" Featurette
  • Gag Reel
  • Audio Commentary with Director Nima Nourizadeh

These are marked in the press release as "subject to change" so keep an eye on the details when you make your purchase.
