Ellen DeGeneres hosts the 79th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA, on Sunday, February 25, 2007.The 79th Annual Academy Awards were presented last night, Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the Kodak Theatre and televised live on ABC. The event was hosted this year by Ellen Degeneres. Clocking in at 3 hours and 40 minutes or so, the Oscars presentation upheld its tradition of overstaying its welcome.

The opening sequence featuring various nominees in a pseudo-interview for what I've seen referred to as an extended Gap commercial was overly long and only contained a few entertaining pieces (like how many times some of the people had been nominated without a win and Leonardo DiCaprio being asked how many times he's died in movies). Degeneres' monologue should have been truncated to set the proper pace for the rest of the evening.

Perhaps the Academy needs to hire Thelma Schoonmaker, who won the award for Editing for The Departed, to trim the fat from the proceedings.

While I didn't mind the silhouette dancers forming shapes associated with the various movies, the special effects chorus was unnecessary and the montage honoring Ennio Morricone (composer for such movies as "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) was very long considering that Clint Eastwood had to interpret Morricone's thank you speech.

Giving the honorees a countdown clock with a hard cutoff of the microphone would send the message that thank you speeches need to be brief and to the point. A possible exception might be for the winner of Best Motion Picture, since it's the final award and the most widely followed one.

Maybe they could do for the winners like they do on the "Wheel of Fortune" TV show (where they automatically give the contestant the most common letters that everyone chose) and subtitle the winner's family and friends and agents and gardeners' names while they're walking up to the microphone. Each nominee would have to submit no more than 10 names that would be shown on the subtitles. Then, in their speech, they are not allowed to mention anyone by name, company, or profession so as not to offend anyone that might not be included. That change alone would cut a lot of time from the presentation.

Best Director Martin Scorcese at the 79th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA, on Sunday, February 25, 2007.Below are two lists of the winners and nominees. The first is grouped by movie, so you can see which movies won an Academy Award. The second is grouped by award category, so that you can view the list of nominees that were vying for each award, and which won that award.

Many of these movies are still in theaters, or will be making a return visit as a result of winning an Oscar, so it's not too late to see them for yourself!
