In the early 1830s, restless Kentucky trailblazers Jim Deakins (Kirk Douglas) and Boone Caudill (Dewey Martin) join an expedition organized by Boone's uncle Zeb (Arthur Hunnicutt, in an Oscar-nominated performance), traveling some 2,000 miles up the Missouri River to trade goods with the Blackfoot Indians. Standing in their way: the mighty Missouri River Company, which doesn't take kindly to outside competition.
