Additional Theater Information

History

The Marcus Southtown opened on Wednesday, November 2, 1966 as a 1,100 seat single-screen theater by Marcus Theatres Management Corp. According to an ad that appeared in that day's Milwaukee Journal, the opening movie was "Way... Way Out" starring Jerry Lewis. The Southtown was Marcus' tenth Milwaukee-area theater and its 49th in Wisconsin, according to an article written in the Milwaukee Journal on opening day. The theater is described as having a "floor plan that is oval, and the floor itself if slightly concave, offering a bowl effect and an unobstructed view of the screen." This auditorium was equipped to play 70mm movies before it was twinned.

Two additional screens were added in 1973, and the additions were announced in a newspaper ad that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal on July 10, 1973. Ben D. Marcus, President of Marcus Theatres, billed Southtown as having "the finest automated sound and projection designed for your viewing pleasure."

The original large auditorium was twinned at a later time (when?), and the theater was then a four-screen location.

According to our records, the last day the theater showed movies is August 26, 2001. The West Allis Star ran an article on July 12, 2001 announcing that the theater was to be replaced by a donut shop. In actuality, the Krispy Kreme donut shop (Milwaukee's first) was built in the parking lot in front of the Southtown building. The actual Southtown building was absorbed by the shopping center, and retail spaces were created.
