Built in 1935 as The State Theatre. The first movie theater in Austin, it opened on Christmas Day 1935. It received a major facelift in 1981, restoring much of its Art Deco design, but it went vacant in 1986. The City of Austin purchased the theater and leased it to a live theater company. A major rehab project began in 1998, and the theater company eventually purchased the theater outright.
In 2000, the theater company merged with The Paramount Theatre for the Performing Arts to form the Austin Theatre Alliance. The fates of the State and the next-door Paramount Theatre were now joined.
A city water main break damaged the State in June 2006, and the theater had to cancel its season to make repairs. It reopened March 1, 2011.
